End of the Affair

"I'm pregnant." Joan said, quietly.

Adam stared blankly at her. "How?"

"You know how." Joan said, smiling a little.

"I..." Adam shook his head. "I can't do this, Joan."

Joan's smile slipped away. She looked down at her feet. "I'm keeping it."

"Joan-"

"Adam, I love you." Joan looked up at him, tears in her eyes. "I love you but
I won't kill our baby."

"Adoption." Adam said, desperately.

Joan shook her head. "I'm keeping it." She said, again.

"I'm not ready to be a father." Adam turned away from her. He didn't see her
sad, knowing nod.

"Goodbye, Adam."
